Hi -
I wonder if anyone can help. I updated the sun java to version 1.5.0 and now
I can't get any applets to work - just get the red X in the corner. I've
disabled my firewall, windows defender, spybot, Avast Antivirus and enabled
java in the security tab in IE and 'advanced'. I have also enabled Sun java
in the control panel.

It won't work in IE, Firefox or Netscape.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a previous version which I could install
after removing 1.5.0?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Brian.

Thanks Carey for your prompt reply. I have already tried the fixes in the
link you have suggested without any success. I think I really need an
earlier version, worked OK until I installed the latest one.

Thanks again,
Brian.

The earlier versions have vulnerabilities in them that are actively being exploited by
malware

The latest version is v5 update 6 and it should be used, not a much earlier version.

Hi Carey,
Many thanks for the suggestions, I have tried uninstalling then installing
again but still no joy! During the installation I unchecked the option to
install the Google toolbar - I don't suppose this would have prevented the
proper installation - or would it?!

I take David Lipman's point about the security vulnerabilities, however, as
I am not having much success with the latest version, I do not have much
choice other than to do without Java.

Thanks again for your help,
Brian.

Try the following:

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Restore Defaults,
then click Apply.

If still not resolved, uninstall your current version of Java,
then download and install the Manual Offline Installation version:
http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

P.S. Make sure to close IE before beginning the installation.
