Thrilling. I was offered 8 by Suns automatic update process on a machine
just yesterday. I've been installing 9 on most machines for a while now.

That's Sun for you, Bill - what can I say...
Mow Green would have some words and likely will

Thank You Randy. Can't seem to find an answer on the Sun site, Would you
know if you could remove update 8 and 9 from Add/Remove without affecting
update 10 ? Or should i just leave it alone.

My java runs on the 26th of each month for updates, although I got nothing
this month, I got upgrade 9 last month. I was always told to uninstall the
previous one when U download an update, so I took out 8 after 9 was installed.

Have no idea about 10, as so far it wasn't offered to me as an update, so
this is news to me. Oh well, guess I will wait and see what happens. Thanx
for the link, maybe I will read more about it later tonight....:)

The Sun Java auto-update mechanism is extremely unreliable, JJ!
Watch for *posted* updates in areas, such as this.

Hi JJ, In control panel double click the steaming cup of coffee (Java) and in
my Java control panel it says : on the second day of each month at 5:00 PM
Java will check for an update, yours says different ? Also you can update
from there

Well... maybe itÅ› nescessary to also read release notes about this update.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/ReleaseNotes.html

Nothing about security, it seems to be just a *normal* software update.

If users having trouble with a specific site, the site owner probably
points this user to upgrade to update 10. And Sun slowly rolls it out
without bandwith trouble and costs.

"nema problema"... Java horror rumours... ;)

I went to Ubuntu and have no trouble with this "mess" anymore...

regards
plun

You not only can, but should. In some cases, leaving an old version with a
security vulnerability in place leaves that vulnerability open.

The design of Java allows for dependencies of applications on a particular
version. However, for many users, this isn't a practical
consideration--remove the old ones and if something does break, they are
available to be replaced.

Ron, the general rule is to apply the update, disable to automatic update
mechanism and uninstall **all** previous updates via Add/Remove Programs.

So--what problems are left? Is it really perfect?

No "problems" Bill, only challengies .... ;)

ItÅ› "drivers hell", old fashion Linux ways, modern Linux thinkers ways
but itÅ› really fun.... The Ubuntu distro is really good.... ;)

"The magic cube" is something special.... whats Aero and Win-Flip ? ;)

(and XP as a rescue if something goes totally wrong)

It's the challenges that provide exercise: I spent some time learning about
PHP Safe mode last night. I barely have any idea about what PHP is, let
alone why it has a safe mode that many folks want to turn off, rather than
on, but the complexities of finding the right way to turn it off on a given
linux setup, depending on the control panel available, etc, are mind
boggling. Admittedly, this is an unusual setup--virtual servers running on
an "appliance"--but my experience didn't fill me with confidence about the
overall design.

Update 9 was a while ago, Robin.
You might find why in the release notes I posted.

Hi Ron...Yes I checked my java and it says it ran at 4:45 on the 26th of Nov.
but no updates. Guess I will have to do it manually. I love it when these so
called automatic updates don't work. Oh well, that is why I check here alot,
I get more info..

Enjoy, and TTYL...:)

You may want to just trust the automatic update. plun says the notes to
this update don't mention any security issue--Sun doesn't push every version
update to everyone at 100 megs a shot--it would be a waste of bandwidth.

Hi Bill..I went to my Java in control panel, hit update and it came back and
told me I have the latest so I ain't messing with it. A friend had the same
message, so as long as it is working, I am leaving it be. Like they say, if
it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Enjoy your weekend....:)

I think that's a good choice in this case. Autoupdate mechanisms vary.
For example, Adobe's seems to say no updates are available if it is simply
unable to contact the their site--which is not helpful. I'm unsure about
how reliable Sun's is--I mentioned that it offered .8 to me when .9 had been
out for a good long time, and, I think, offered on other machines. However,
from what I can recall at the moment, as long as you are on 8 or above,
there aren't publicly reported vulnerabilities out there at the moment.
