When attempting to sum a column of numbers with the sum
function, I get zero. I believe this has something to do
with the content of the cells that I attempting to sum.
The spreadsheet has been copied from a website and the
cells contain $ signs. The sum function is somehow not
reading a value.
Also, how can an file be attached to a posted message
like this one to help clarify the problem.

Dee,

You have got text in the cells. You need to get the $ off the strings. Is it
$nnn or $ nnnn, it should be possible to work through?

You'll be pretty unpopular if you attach files in a non binary NG.
I am assuming that you have hidden html characters thus your values
are read as text by excel. Select the values, do edit>replace, in the
replace what box
place the cursor, hold down alt while typing 0160 on the numeric keypad,
release alt,
leave replace with box empty. If this is a regular thing use a macro like
trimall
