Sulky Windows start-up

Recently on my pc, which is only a year old, Windows would begin to start up
but would freeze or hang, whichever is correct, with the moving blue
rectangles ceasing to move, and nothing happening until I switched off the pc
and re-started in safe mode, which usually or perhaps always worked; I can't
quite remember. Anyway, if I switched the pc off after a while, then back on
in ordinary start-up mode, it worked ok; but it took me a while to see this
pattern, and in the meantime a support technician had guided me through
re-installing Windows, which failed to cure the problem but created some
interesting new ones, which I'm resolving one by one with the help of your
kind selves.
The pattern which I failed to see in time ( though I'm still not sure about
it) is that the pc doesn't like to start from cold when my usb-connected 500
mb memory stick is in place. It doesn't seem to mind the printer and external
internet modem being connected, but if the memory stick is in place, and if I
start the pc from cold in the morning, then that's when the start-up problem
occurs, which it doesn't do if I take the stick out first. Unfortunately, if
I wait a while and then insert the stick, the screen freezes and I have to
remove the stick, switch off the pc, re-insert the stick and switch the pc
back on. What a hassle it all is ! But I need the stick to back up my files,
so I would very much appreciate some advice as to how to solve the problem.
Perhaps it would help if I said that the pc is still under guarantee.

It's possible that your power supply is on the edge or not able to supply
enough juice to get everything going all at once. With a cold boot all your
hardware gets started whether you are going to use it or not and there's a
heavy draw on the PSU. Reboots are easier because all those things are
already running or set to run. If since you got your computer you've added
much hardware this could be the case. I don't know how many watts a 500mb
memory stick uses but it could be just enough to make the difference. If you
disconnect your printer, modem and say a hard drive if you have an extra and
it starts with the mem stick in I'd say for sure it's your PSU. It could
aslo be a faulty USB connection or something wrong on your mobo having to do
with it not yielding enough current or shaky wiring. See www.usbman .com

If you determine that it's your power supply don't just go out and buy one
because the package says its 500 watts and expect it to be the fix. There's
only a few reliable brands and you need to make sure there's enough amps on
the rails you are using most. It gets a bit technical.

Thanks for the help; I'll try disconnecting the printer and modem and leaving
the memory stick. If it's what you suggest, then it sounds as if he guarantee
should cover it. Thanks again

Its more likely that a driver is a problem, try starting the pc in safe mode
from the start.
You havent been using win update for drivers have you?
Or possibly a bad internal connection.
You shouldn't boot or shutdown with a memory stick still attached, in any
case.

Message to smoker: I tried leaving the memory stick in place and
disconnecting the printer and external modem before booting up in the
morning, and it worked. To DL: Windows updates automatically, so I've no idea
what comes down the shute. Is there a problem with driver updates? If I'm not
supposed to leave the memory stick in place when shutting down or booting up,
then I'd be better off without it, because to insert it after booting up I'd
have to disconnect the printer and modem, then insert the stick, then
re-connect them. If I leave the printer and modem connected and insert the
stick, the screen freezes. It's too much hassle, what with having to crawl
behind the pc case twice a day, so unless there's another way, I'll try using
a disc for backing up, and use the memory stick as a medallion. Why, by the
way, should I not leave the stick in place when closing or starting up?

1) Win driver updates are often default drivers and not full manu drivers
therefore you may lose functionality
2) They have been known to be corrupt
3) The version numbers differ from manu versions
4) Often cause sys problems, for any of the previous reasons

If the stick is left in place when you shutdown/start it can lead to data
loss

Perhaps you need a powered hub
