Would it be ok to install RC1 build 5600 on top of build 5536? Or is it
necessary to format/reinstall?
Anyone know for sure?

Reason why I ask: I'm lazy :^)

Do not install over 5536, as any bugs filed on 5600 from a 5536 upgrade will
be invalidated and you will be asked to reinstall.

I understand the sentiments. I upgraded two machines
to RC1. The install was flawless. An upgrade install
will take quite a bit longer than a clean install.

The only time I had an upgrade install fail, was when
I attempted to upgrade my laptop from 5384 to 5536.
Just ended up doing a clean install.

However, Tom Ziegmann is correct. But, I am testing
Vista for me- not for Microsoft. I come here and try to
help, post some feedback, report a few bugs- but when
it comes right down to it- the testing I do, is for my pleasure
and at my leisure. If you want to try an upgrade install,
go right ahead.

Have "upgrade" 5536 to 5600 - not problems Nada. All Vista installations
are "clean installs" - when you select upgrade Vista clean installs but
retains previously installed programs, etc.

Is that really a "clean install" when Windows.old can take up many MB of
space on a Hard Drive. Hit the format button during install and you have a
clean install.

Hi, I would really be very thankful if someone could explain this in a little
more detail.

I am 16 and well, thrilled to be part of this beta. (even though its easy
to get I am pretty excited to know enough to be able to do this) However, I
downloaded pre-rc1 "just to try it" and it was so good I decided that I
should use it for everything. heh. But now that RC1 and RC2 are out (I have
isos for x64 and x86 for them both downloaded), I was wondering what to do.

I want to upgrade to RC1 or RC2 (preferably RC2), but I am worried that I
will lose my programs or something, seeing as thats what Ive always thought a
clean install to be. I have 80 GB space left on the drive, with 3 instances
of windows on here (2 XP and the vista beta - so the XP can be deleted for
space basically), and as I just said I would like to be able to "upgrade" in
the since, that I click a few buttons, and I have the updated version of
Vista.

Is this possible, or does my rambling not make any sense? Thanks for your
help!
