I have had Canon and HP printers where cartridges have naturally been
overpriced. Any suggestions for one that is cheaper to run?

What kind of printer? What kind of printing?

Brother is the current go-to. Great units, great prices, low costs.

Just general printing and a few directly on to CD/DVDs. I seldom print
on photographic paper.

Find a used one about 10 -15 years old
They were made to last for centuries, and never had any ink chips or built
in obselecence software.

I still have a Epson EX1000 9 pin dot matrix printer under my desk.I
kept it to use for printing out manuals.
They were around £1,000 UK when first on the market. I think that mine
was around £400 when I bought it as an end of line product.
My last 10 year old printer a Canon BJC 7000 died when it was around 6
years old.

My family still has an Epson LX-800 DMP. Can't tell 'ya when it was
bought but close to 20 years ago and it sill works great. Use it for
pin feed 1"x3" adress labels.

When I use it with my Vista based notebook I give it a modern twist. I
have a MPI Bluetooth Printer Adapter. The MPI unit is a Centronics
Parallel to Bluetooth radio interface and I print to the LX-800 via
Bluetooth.

Getting back to what you want you have two choices. Epson Artisan and
Canon based upon your statement of CD/DVD face printing preference.

I have been happily using the Epson Artisan 835 (albeit I use Krylon
Clear Coat Acrylic to protect the printed CD/DVD media. This was advice
that had been provided to me, in this News Group, a while ago and has
been proven to be excellent advice).
With my intermittent cartridge problem reported in another thread I will
need to decide soon. At the moment I am siding with Canon.
Unfortunately I recently bought a new Canon scanner so I am resistant to
a multi function printer.

I already owned a Canon LiDE 30 when I got my Artisan 835 and my HP LaserJet 1100A also
has a B&W scanner attachment.
Since the Epson has a flatbed and a ADF, I only use the Canon with my notebook when I take
the nobook to some environment outside my home and the HP 1100A to make quick and easy
paper copies.
