suggestions for a router

I really know nothing about routers & looking up everything on the net has
just confused me more. So maybe somebody can help me. Right now I am using a
computer with windows me & I would like to get a router wireless/wired that
I can use so that right now I can connect my pc & connect my xbox 360 up to
run.
Now later on maybe a month I am planning on getting 2 more computers to
add to this configuration a computer from work that will have windows me on
it also & also one that will have windows xp pro on it. So I would need I
guess 4 ports. Money is a little tight but if I do need to get an expensive
router then I can save up for it. Some suggestions would be great.
Also do the wireless routers really attract alot of leachers &
security/ad ware problems? I've heard all kinds of stories on this subject.
And I am using cable internet connection. If i've left anything out please
let me know. Thanks

I would not suggest wireless for your xbox because the bandwidth is
rather low for the transfer of data for a game and it's pretty unstable when
there is obstruction . (Ex. Your mom walking around the house or having
bluetooth signals around)

Most home use routers comes with 4 LAN port, no worries about that. If
you are new to router, I suggest Buffalo or Linksys because they have a
user-friendly interface with lots of tips/helps and the price is reasonable.
Just make sure your don't opt for Zyxel, its expensive and have weird
propierty standards.
Before you buy any router, make sure that it has NAT, UPNP support,
firewall & intrusion detection system (IDS). These are the basic stufss that
most router has which you'll find handy.
Also do the wireless routers really attract alot of leachers &

Yes & No. It really depends on how you configure your router. You can
set you AP invisible, disable DHCP, use encryption, only allow certain MAC
address to use the router, etc...to tighten the security.

Yet, honestly, even if you set your AP to invisible, with the approriate
software, it's visible. Encryption are breakable, MAC address is
spoofable....hell, but not everyone knows how to do that....who cares? I
don't...and I don't know how to do all those in the same time either.

Wired or wireless makes no difference to adware! BTW, make sure you buy g
instead of b if you are getting a wireless router...(that's 56Mbs vs 11Mbs)
 
if you live in the uk go to argos and get a router they have belkin routers
which are easy to set up. Get a router with 4 ethernet outputs. the routers
are easy to set up aslong as you are not using aol.

ok i will look at wired routers for now.

Ill assume you are in the US since it says comcast. Anyway in the US
places like Compusa often have dirt cheap sales on wireless routers.
The thing is these can be used wired or wireless so given the dirt
cheap cost and that they can be used both ways you should get one and
try it out.

Check the next Compusa midnight madness sale coming up either Friday
or the weekend and the Presidents Day sale. I think there was a
Linksys for dirt cheap AFTER REBATES. If youve never done rebates
before BE SURE TO READ ALL THE RULES - if you dont follow them to the
T you wont get your rebate. And be sure to send them in on time. The
best thing to do is do them right after you bought the item.

I think the prices were around 5-10 bucks net rebates.

Sorry I should of said that I am from the US and I have the ad for the
presidents sale at compusa they list a MaxG 125mbps wireless router with
print server. It looks like it's a U.S robotics brand. it's $70 then with
rebates it's $20. I'll do some research and see if it got any good reviews
when I get home from work.
 
you should look in to netgear as well they are very reliable. far a
Compusless I used to work there a long time ago and there rebates are a
joke. I seen then rise the price just to say they give a instore rebate and
sell it at normal price. linksys used to be the shit back before cicso
bought them out. Me personly only have 2 Linksys routers for now and they
work just fine with two wireless laptop and two wired desk tops. the wired
desk top gets more bandwidth and down loads faster but keep in mind you will
need to change the defualt user name and password to your router that is
conected to the internet.
