Hi all

Does anybody have suggestions for hardware on my new computer?
I'm working a lot with Photoshop, Quark and other image/DTP related apps, so
a lot of RAM and a good graphics card is essential. But I haven't kept
up-to-date with hardware for a few years, so I'm not sure what to get.
Price range is 1000$ / 800 euro (just the system, not screen, mouse,
keyboard)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Anders

I believe Photoshop will use dual processors. 3D graphics cards are designed for games. You don't need a state of the art 3D graphics card for image editing.

Matrox P650 graphics card or similar.
Nforce2 Ultra 400 chipset for the motherboard.
1GB or more of good quality PC3200 DDR RAM

Athlon 64 - 3500, at least 1.5GB of memory, video card with
at least 128MB memory, performance of video not important
unless there's very demanding _3D_ use. It's not like there
are specific brand/model parts you'd need, you already have
the two main things in mind though a fast HDD is good for
work with large files.

Ideally you would want a dual Opteron system but that will cost you more
than $1K. The next best would be an Athlon 64 3500+ system with 2G of RAM.
I think the RAM will push you over the $1K limit by a little, if 1K is
hard and fast then get 1G now and upgrade later. I about a year you will
be able to upgrade the Athlon 64 to a dual core chip which will fin in the
same 939 pin socket. The dual core A64 should perform almost identically
to a dual Opteron.

For a 939 pin A64 get the following,

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard
Athlon 64 3500+ 939 pin
1-2G of DDR3200 unbuffered RAM (preferably with ECC)
200G Seagate SATA drive.

I do the same job, and this is what i took.

Supermicro X6DVL-G, Nocona Xeon 2.8GHz, Supermicro certified 1024MB ECC
Reg., Quadro NVS 280, PCI-E and EN-7280 case. It cost just about 800$, and
you have a great board with lot of room to upgrade, sufficient and
reliable memory and great dual monitor card. I dare to say that it has
picture same as Matorx's card have.

Well, there is one problem... I had storage system already, so if you need
new drives, you will not be able to take this configuration. However, i
strongly reccomend going for something like this, when you will have
enough money and demands for more processor need, you won't have to change
whole platform. Plus, there is good chance that Paxville and Dempsey will
fit in Socket 604, so dual core processors are going to be available for
upgrade.

Everybody,

Thanks a lot. Got a few good ideas I'll look into. The RAM being more
important on graphics cards than state-of-the-art technology was news to
me - so great! Also, suggestions for chip sets and dual screen cards was
very helpful.
