Suggestion: Tray Icon

Please add a tray icon with the capability to enable/disable real-time
scanning, as was possible with MS Antispyware Beta1.

Thanks :

Hello Sal,

If you haven't already read Mike Chan's reply dated 2/18/2006 in this group,
Microsoft plans to add an option in the future to display the icon for those
who want to see that it's there. It was decided not to display the tray icon
because many users had too many icons.

We should point out that the mode of icon display is part of the new User
Interface standards for Vista--the Notification area, is, after all, for
notifications. I sure would be a lot cleaner if we only saw stuff there
when attention was needed?

I beleive Windows Defender already displays an icon for users's attention.

Have a read in the following link:

http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware/archive/2006/02/16/419794.aspx

"A consistent point of feedback from Windows users is that there are just
too many icons that appear in the system tray. With this in mind, we
decided not to display a system tray icon for Windows Defender if no action
is needed. This way, we can help the industry move towards a model where
the items in the system tray are programs that need a user's attention
instead of items that are simply running. "

No, I didn't.. but that sounds good to me :)
Thanks :)

I agree there's too many taskbar icons, but if the program has options that
most users would need to change 'on the fly', IE: firewall, antivirus, etc
then there should be a way to allow them to do so easily.. the tray icon
seems the best bet for this sort of program.. most of the tray icons are
pretty useless (quicktime, etc) and I agree should be more of a notification
than a constant presence.

Fair question. In Vista, the Security center monitors the service an alarms
at problems. I know that messages here indicate that they are considering
the best solution for this for XP, so I'll wait and see. I'll reiterate,
however, that the icon seems to me to be associated with the msascui.exe
app, which doesn't do Real Time Protection, nor scanning, nor definition
updates--those are all done by either the Windows Defender
Service--msmpeng.exe, or the Mpcmdrun.exe command-line executable--I'm not
clear that the icon is associated with either of these.

I don't disagree with your premise at all--but asking for "the icon" may not
be the best answer.
