My 2 year old HP 940c is just getting a tad old and is having minor
problem handling thick papers (labels, etc). Rather than to fix it, I
decided to replace it outright.

I know some Canon printers are good. What model am I looking at? I'd
like something that can do decent photo quality prints at 1200x1200 or
better. 4 or 6 color system, more color is just overkill.

Bonus: if the ink cart are easy to refill as I usually refill anyway.

I replaced my trusty old HP895cxi with the wireless HP6840. The carts on the
6840 appear tiny but seem to last almost as long as the big ones on the 895.
It's not sold as a photo printer but does quite a good job. Pure reds are a
shade too vibrant for my taste (and compared to my Epson 2100/2200 photo
printer). I've not yet tried it with thick A4 paper but have printed on good
quality envelopes.

A few negative things...

1) The output tray. It doesn't really have one, just a prop to stop pages
falling off the top of the input tray. Poor design that bit.
2) The ink level monitor. It's so inaccurate as to be next to usless. It
showed empty after about 2 weeks but more than 2 months later it was still
printing fine with same level of use. Best just ignore it.
3) It's quite a bit bigger than the 895.

The IP4000 might be what you want, the IP5000 with twice as many zozzles,
IIRC. The are CMY with both dye and pigment black, and refilable. the x200
series are close to their x000 cousins, but chipped, athough you can refill
and continue to use it when the chip is "spent", albeit with the loss of
ink monitoring.

IF YOU USE CANON INK YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS CRAP

REFILLING IS NOT A CONSIDERATION WHEN CHOOSING A PRINTER.
