I have a Microsoft Access application that suddenly has started to run
very slowly on some machines. In particular our (Dell) laptops seem
very susceptable to this slowdown.

Where before it might have taken 2 seconds to format one page suddenly
it has started to take 10 seconds or more. It appears to be something
to do with the user profile since on one machine where it was running
slowly I logged on under another user name and it started running
quickly again.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going wrong?

1. Temporarily disable the virus checker and see what happens. If things
improve, set the virus checker to not scan mdb or md? files.

2. Speaking of virus checkers, update and run a full scan.

3. Same goes for running a good spyware checker.

4. Go to Tools, Options, General Tab and turn off Name Autocorrect on all of
your databases. IMHO it's a piece of do-do and the cause of many problems.
While there turn off Compact on Close if enabled. You'll be glad that you did.

5. If you are using Access to change Excel worksheets or Excel to update
Access, you might have trouble brewing. Due to a Patent dispute, you cannot
change, add, or delete data in tables that are linked to an Excel workbook in
Office Access 2003 or in Access 2002 after the latest service pack/release is
installed.!

On further experimentation the problem seems to be related to printer
drivers. I changed the default printer to "Microsoft Office Document
Image Writer" and the slowdown disappeared.

Any idea why the printer settings would effect the speed of generating
an excel spreadsheet?
