Greetings-
Trying to instal OS on a pc. Windows stops in different instances
of installation. I downloaded ubontu and same thing happens. I
replaced my cd rom with an older one and same thing happens. I
replaced the hard drive with a smaller older one and same thing
happens. Not sure what is going on. Usually windows stops in middle
of formating the hard drive.

ok how is the ram test done?
I just want to know it. I was finally able to install Ubuntu on the
smaller hard drive. Now I like to change the larger drive to slave (
and need to know how it is done please any url is appreciated since I
saw some stuff about having to change jumpers? And I don't know how to
do that ) and then I like to try to reformate the 2nd hard drive. How
do I do this in Ubontu please? Then I'll try to install windows on the
cleanly formated hard drive.

Regards-
Sean

Boot a memtest86 CD.

The ubuntu install will do a ram test too.

It should be on a sticker on the drive. The drive manufacturer's site should
have jumper detail too, save you removing the drive to read the sticker.

Just jumper the drive and do the ubuntu install again to the second drive.
Then I'll try to install windows on the cleanly formated hard drive.

I'd still do the ram test first with memtest86.

There's a RAM test on the Ubuntu CD, on the same menu that let you install the
OS.

Ok but can I not do the ubuntu install again. I like the environment
so much, I don't want to take the chance to mess it up now that it is
working fine. Can I just reformat the 2nd drive for Windows
speciffications ie. NTFS without having to install umontu again and
then try to install windows XP on the 2nd drive? And do the RAM test
without re-installing ubontu? I suspect if the Ubontu install does
the ram test during the install, then the software should be availble
in the os to just do scan the harddrive. Right? Oh one more question
please, once I set the jumper for the 2nd hard drive as slave then
Ubontu will recognize the hard drive upon reboot right? From there I
can format it right? Thanks for all your help, I am really looking
forward work with this, right some JAVA code, etc. This is Excellent
OS.

igonr this last post please. I did the ram test and it failed;
actually the test stoped 1/2 way. I think test #5 was 63% successful
and next one 93% and next one halted the machine for good. So what is
next please? Do I need new RAM? Is there an online place you guys
trust?

Yes.

And do the RAM test without re-installing ubontu?

Yes, you can do the test alone and not reinstall it.
I suspect if the Ubontu install does the ram test during the install,

It doesnt, its an option you get to do or not after booting the Live CD.

Not sure what this is about. Yes, any linux can check the hard
drive. Not clear what this has to do with the ram test, if anything.

The usual way to check a hard disk with any linux is to use smartctl.

Yes.

Yes, tho you dont need to to install XP on that
drive, the XP install will format it for you too.

Yeah, its pretty decent.

Too late, I didnt notice this one till I had replied to the previous one |-(

Get ram that works in that motherboard.
Do I need new RAM?

Probably. It can be just that you arent using the right settings for the
ram, but it sounds like the settings are a bit beyond your capabilitys.
Is there an online place you guys trust?

Crucial is pretty decent, but there is a cost for that, they arent that cheap.

Ok I'll try it. Just wondering do I have to reinstall Ubontu for the
RAM test?

No. When you boot the CD and it gives the option to install, select the
one that gives you the other bootup options and you should see
memtest86 listed.

Using Windows, I just stuck the memtest86 CD in the drive and
rebooted. To get back into Windows, I just remove the CD.
