I used to be able to capture to MPEG2 without dropping frames but lately, I
cannot capture without getting choppy sound using ATI's TV application and
dropping tons of frames using 3rd party apps.
Is it the upgrade to the latest drivers and MMC or some other change in my
system?
Dell 4400 Pentium 4 1.6GHz 1GB memory XP Pro SP2
AIW 8500DV Catalyst 5.1 + MMC 9.02
I'm using a PAL AIW 8500DV under XP Pro SP2 with CAT 5.1 drivers and MMC
9.02 and captures using MPEG2 and ATIs Proprietary VCR formats come out
fine. I prefer using VCR format because the MMC player fast forwards and
rewinds these much more effectively than MPEG2. If I ever need to convert
the files to MPEG2s I can do so using ATIs Library feature.
If the "upgrade" was done by just installing the newer drivers and MMC over
the top of the existing versions, that's a likely cause of problems. I
suggest MMC be uninstalled (not saving any settings), then uninstall the DVD
Decoder and then drivers - pc rebooted and then new drivers installed - pc
rebooted and then DVD Decoder installed then MMC installed. This assumes all
the prerequisite bits and pieces are installed such as the latest DirectX
and Windows Media Encoder as well as the DAO/MDAC. Although MMC 9.02 is
being used the MMC 9.03 Download page mentions cards prior to the Radeon
9000 series should use Catalyst 4.10 and MMC 9.02 - I'm unsure what effect
using Catalyst 5.1 has on this setup but I believe these suddenly poor
captures are a result of something else wrong with the installation or setup
of this machine.
