I'm sure this didn't happen all by itself, but for the life of me I can't
remember what I'd done to change display properties in these files, and
would like to restore them. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

It's time to perform some simple house cleaning chores:

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE , and hit enter.
This will start your disk cleanup utility. Make sure to cleanup
your Temporary Internet Files.

Thanks for the swift reply Carey.

Cleanup is a ritual on my 'puter here, done about once every 30 or so
minutes of browsing. A full Norton AV scan follows AdAware and Spybot scours
once a week as well, so I doubt there are any unwanted nasties at work. My
dilemma is that the files (bmp's, tiff's and jpg's) in question are all
represented by the *same icon*. Unless the cursor is rested on them or their
Properties opened I've no way of determining exactly what type of image file
they are.

You may have a damaged Iconcache file.

Right click on desktop and select Properties and settings and then change the colour depth.
(If you are on 32 bit, change to 16 bit) exit and re-boot.

Then change it back to what ever colour you were on before. via same means. This rebuilds
the icons and may fix your problem.

Thanks Frenchy, I hadn't thought of desktop settings. Alas it, too didn't
seem to do the trick. I went into Folder Options and saw the familiar
Windows yellowish acorn icon for Bitmaps but they're all showing the same as
before (I think all are displaying Tiff symbols).

I appreciate it and still have my eyes and ears open for another possible
remedy.

PS...you mentioned Iconcache. What path would I use to get to it if not by
adjusting/re-adjusting bit color?

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Folder Options |
View tab | Scroll down to and UNCheck:
Hide extensions for known file types | Apply | OK
Won't fix your icon problem, but you'll be able to
read the difference between bmp's, tiff's and jpg's.

Could be in a few places:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Application Data
C:\Documents and Settings\OwnerLocal Settings\Application Data

You could look at increasing the Cache size
If you download Xteq X-Setup, you can play around with the size.

Xteq X-Setup is free at www.xteq.com.

Thanks Wes, but no joy. Still seeing the same icons for all three file
types.
