sudden tiny monitor icons & text printing

can't return to normal size monitor icon display though
did start/control panel/display icon/clicked on
settings/changed screen resolution shifted to rhs
1024x768 pixels /OK but NOTHING CHANGED OR WORKS ! also
although set printing text size to LARGEST am getting
only ultra smallest printing & don't know what to do [am
68 yr old NOT computer savvy].
Contacted HP technical support Mike case # 7309910739 who
said my printer HP 3820 CN 3581848Y is NOT at fault .
Please HELP as I cannot read tiny windows XP screen text

To change font sizes only:::

Right click the Desktop | Properties | Appearance tab | Font size
Pick one: Normal, Extra Large or Large | Apply | OK

OR

To increase or decrease the size of objects and text on your screen:::

Right click the Desktop | Properties | Settings tab | Advanced button |
DPI Setting | Normal size (96 DPI) or Large size ( 120 DPI) Apply or
Other | OK
