Hi Guys!

This wasn't happening before... but in the last few weeks... there have been
a few times where my system just powers itself off.
Using an Asus A7N8X with ATI 9200, 256MB DDR400, DVD/Maxtor HD and that's
about it... running an AMD 2500+ not overclocked. Usually when I am playing
games... it tends to shut off more often... and I noticed the temperture is
up to 60 celcius (143 F). This is hotter than what is used to be... and
sometimes... once or twice a day.... it turns off.... bam. I turn it back
on and everything seems normal again. BIOS is 1003

I am thinking it could be the power supply? or Overheating? Power supply
is a tad bit better than the really really cheap ones... but still 4.80V
where it should be 5V and so on.

any ideas?

thanks

Jeff

That is a electrical short-circuit going on, 2 things have the same symptom
:

Verify if your motherboard is correctly fixed into the case, it must be
fixed over plastic spacers, there must be no contact between your
motherboard circuit and the case's chassis.

It is your PSU that probably doesn't have the right power to accomplish all
power request of your hardware components, just unplug you FDD power cable
just to see if the problem persists, or something else. 350W is a safe value
nowadays, and 400W is even better.

This simply is not true as far as the plastic washers.... if that is, you
use the *standard* size bolts that screw into cases (they usually come with
a case and/or motherboard...some cases already have them pre-installed) and
screws that screw into the bolts, there should be no problem with short
circuits as there is plenty of clearance from any circuitry. I've never had
any problems with installing a motherboard without washers and I've
installed many motherboards over the years. If a company designs a
motherboard with circuitry too close to the screw holes, then it isn't well
designed IMHO. However, if you're using something other than the standard
bolts and screws and the circumference of either is too large, then yeah....
I suppose there could be a problem with a short circuit. BTW.....I'm not
trying to dispute your way of installing a motherboard....many other ppl use
washers also and that is just fine....I'm just pointing out that it should
not be necessary to use them.

Yeah..all standard parts... and a good quality case... mediocre power
supply.
It was fine for 6 months... then all of a sudden... started crashing. I
unplugged
the system, reset the RTC memory, loaded a new bios from 1003 to 1004...
but since clearing rtc memory... the fan is running faster for some
reason...
and haven't had any crashes yet. Kinda weird. Last night... I actually was
not
able to install a newer BIOS until after I cleared rtc memory.

maybe I won't be crashging any more too... stay tuned..lol

Does the system shut down when you perform any specific operations? I
had a similar problem when encoding video. This caused my P4 HT CPU hit
the roof (100% utilization) along with using a HD and a DVD to their
respective max. This caused the machine to require more wattage than
what my power supply could provide (sustained). I had a 350W power
supply, but it delivers 350W for a sustained time of 7 seconds only
(according to its specification which I read later). The sustained
output is 197W. My system consumes roughly 280W when running at full
load. Hence my power supply got overheated and shut the computer down.

It sounds to me that you (just like me) have to replace your power
supply with a more powerful one.
