Just today my pc has started resetting itself. it was fine until today
and nothing has changed in the system. At first i though it may be my
graphics card but then it locks up under normal windows use. according
to coolbits my gpu is at 46 decrees c. when it restarts and i go in
the bios and check the hardware monitor it says my cpu is at 92
decrees c. this must be the problem right? but why have i not had a
problem before today. graphics card also gets noisier when playing
games. tried it for a bit playing ut2003 with the side of the case off
and it was ok, cpu temp dropped to 68 degess. gfx card was flashed 2
weeks ago.

system specs below

athlon xp 2400+ ( retail with fan that came with it ), not overclocked
512mb pc2100 ddr
k7s5a mobo
2 hard drives ( 60 and 80 gig )
plexwriter 52x32x52 cdrw
lite on 8x dual dvd writer
leadtek geforce fx 5900, flashed to fx 5950 ultra, not really any
faster.
350w psu.
floppy drive
audigy 2 zs
tv card
network card
usb2 card
pci slot below the gfx card is empty
1 case fan

any ideas?

The cheapest thing you can do is buy a new heatsink and
fan, make sure its rated for your processor. If your CPU
fan's stopped running properly then that'd explain the
increased temperature. For a guideline, I have an Athlon
XP 3000+, and the CPU temperature has never gone abovr
48degrees c, so something must be wrong.
If the new heatsink/fan doesn't do anything, then look to
an expert about your mobo, cos I had a K7S5A and as I
understood it, it was only built for up to a 2100+
processor. Worth checking that out.

I think the mobo is ok as it says upto 2600+ in the manual. I have
ordered a new fan from planet micro and ive been looking at getting a
550w psu.

It is common for the computer to shut down when it gets
overheted. This is to protect the components, as
overheating can cause major damage...even temporarily.

I am assuming that you already have a heat sink on your
CPU (it is standard these days) but you only have one
case fan. COnsidering that your system is fairly loaded,
you should buy a Twin Turbo case fan It draws air out
from the computer case.

The brand I use is by Just Cooler TT-900. Here is a
page with a good pic:
http://www.buyextras.com/twtubayco.html (this looks like
its the size of a cdrom drive and in fact takes up one
full 5.25 drive bay but it is guaranteed to reduce your
case temp by as much as 30* C. I use them in all my
computers and never have an overheating problem.

When components overheat, they tends to expand. It is
also possible that you need to check the seating of youur
cards. Pay particular attention to the memory and grapics
cards. If further troubleshooting is required, remove all
cards except graphics and reboot. One by one add other
cards until you find the culprite.

In your case I doubt you will need to go through all
this, however -- most likely it is overheating. Now, if
it is not hardware related, you may want to consider
other options such as having the latest drivers and make
sure Direct X is the latest too. You might want to check
the graphics acceleration.

Hope this is of help.
