Sudden PC reinitiate while installing updates

I was about 3/4 finished installing the updates to my
newly-installed WinXP Professional when my computer
suddenly reinitiated itself. This is NOT to say it shut
down Windows. It was like pressing the initiate button.

I'd used my new system for two days before I realized it
needed to have these updates downloaded. Since a newer
Norton System Works was also installed, I assumed it had
the virus definitions already there, but that, too, was a
bad assumption.

I was in lots of places on the Web during those two days.
Something may have gotten in. Don't know, either way, but
when I tried to update Norton it suddenly reinitiated,
too. I think that was a conflict with Zone Alarm; a
friend says it doesn't work well with Norton on WinXP. So
I unloaded it. I've still gotten sudden reinitiations.
ZA was not loaded when it happened during my installation
of the XP updates.

So the question is: did malware cause it? Did Microsoft
do it? (The installation bar was not full yet, but I was
connected to the Web. Windows made several contacts over
the Web during the install, so I left it connected.)

Another question is: Did my upgrade downloads get fully
installed or not? Windows isn't talking about it. I
think it would be dumb to assume the installation
finished, so I either have partly-installed patches or
none at all. I assume the latter. So how do I get
Microsoft to start the process all over again? They
probably think it's already been done.

(I have an 80 GIG hard drive with about 128 MB of RAM,
both new, and also a new motherboard with a new Celeron
CPU.)

What do I do now?
