Two days ago I turned on my laptop and out of the blue my
mouse refused to work in any way. I tried plugging it
into the alternative USB with no luck and the
message 'USB devices attached has malfunctioned, Windows
does not recognise it'. I switched it back to the
original USB and the same problem occurred.
Turned the laptop on the next day and the mouse worked
but then about 5 or 10 minutes into what I was doing it
ceased working once more with the same problem as above
and has since refused to work.
The mouse has not been damaged so I have no clue.
Your advice please.

Using Device Manager, check the properties for the mouse. If there is a
Power Management page, select not to put the device into standby to save
power.

Also, try a different mouse. The mouse may not appear to be damaged but
there may be a broken wire in the cord. If it is still covered under
warranty, you could have it replaced.

Have you tried the obvious - another mouse?
