Sudden Hibernation

A friend of mine has a Compaq running XP Home and just recently the machine
has been acting up. They don't think or can't remember anything new to be
downloaded but the machine will suddenly go into hibernation mode in the
middle of typing or browsing the web. The only way to wake the machine is to
reboot it. Control Panel settings seem to be okay. System hibernation is
set to never. Would updating the video drivers clear up this situation? Is
there anything else to do?

Hi,

Simply verify the BIOS settings and be sure that the Power Management is set
to be controlled by the OS (ACPI). That should fix the problem cause from
what you are describing, Windows has nothing to do with this hibernation, it
is more likely the BIOS settings.

Hope it helps....

Just to further explain - there's 2 things that can cause your system to
"standby/hibernate"

1) The built in "power state" options on your motherboard's BIOS. You'll
see references to it in the BIOS that look like this : S1 or S3

2) The Windows Standby/Hibernate functions (which are the one's affected by
the video drivers).

The difference is in how they shutdown and store your information when they
do it.

If this is a laptop - check the battery. An old battery can give a false
powerdown indication. If the battery is new and good, there can be a more
serious problem in the charger circuitry or system board - contact HP support.
