Sudden Failure

Yesterday morning I powered down the computer as normal and went to work.

When I got home, the computer running W2k had severe problems.

When it opened, I got a message saying there was a problem with Norton
Anti.virus and it would have to be re-installed.

Also, it told me that 2 programmes (mqsvc.exe and inetinfo.exe) had
generated errors and would be closed by Windows.

The computer eventually opened, but took AGES to do anything. I reset, and
went into safe mode, but still got the errors.

I can't re-install Norton, nor uninstall it, either in normal or safe mode.

Right now, I have the computer working, but only after NUMEROUS restarts.

Can anyone tell what is going on with the computer? It's a P2 300MHz (the
older of my 2 computers!), running W2k Pref, and no software has been
installed recently.

Norton does not crash by itself normally. It may be a virus - some of new viruses are able to crash Norton and McAfee if
are not updated in time.

Do you have a firewall? Maybe just got msbalst.exe virus?

Thanks. I got the patch, and it seems to have solved the problems.

However, msblast.exe is still trying to access the Internet, and I can't get
the CD rom to open using the button on the outside of the computer. This
only happened while I was having the problems, so I'm assuming it's
connected. Any ideas?

you have'nt got rid of the virus if its still trying to access
the internet! The patch closes a security hole only, the fix from
F-secure removes the virus.
