Sudden Failue to Boot XP

I have a Dell system running XP. I have not added new
software for sometime, but suddenly when I attempted to
boot the computer a failure resulted. Whenever the system
is booting up after a few seconds with the XP loading
screen a blue screen will appear for a brief second before
the screen goes black and attempts to reboot again. The
cycle then repeats itself.

The blue screen contains a long message, not allowing me
adequate time to read it. From what I have been able to
read it says that a problem has been detected and windows
is shutting down. UNFORMATABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

Any ideas on how to solve the problem would be appreciated.
