Sudden disk space??

I have had around 1GB free on my primary WinXP hard disk for some
months now and am soon transitioning to a larger hard disk. But
suddenly just now I got a strange message that my disk space problem
was cleaned up and I have 3.2GB free!! I didn't erase a lot of files
and can't on inspection see any major changes. Any thoughts on what
may have caused this and what I might be able to do to check to ensure
that all is okay? Thanks. --Dilip

I'd like you to expand on this 'strange message' a bit more. What was it
and how did you receive it?

Start button --> RUN --> type in:

EVENTVWR

--> Click OK.

Look through the Application and System logs at about the day/time you got
the message for any "Application Popups" and post the exact message of the
text if possible.

Thanks for such a useful response. I didn't know about this message
log viewer. The application messages all looked routine, but I did
find this disk system message at 10:31p, essentially repeated at
11:56p:

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\D during a paging
operation.

As I look back, I see that warning several times earlier in the
day ... and I keep seeing it over the past days as I scroll down. I
did a little bit of research - is this an early sign that there is a
potential hard disk crash on this primary hard disk impending?? I am
about to start a system backup using Retrospect 6.5.

I would look for an explanation in the way you are backing up and
restoring using Retrospect 6.5.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I don't think Retrospect has anything to do with it; I hadn't
backed up with it (I do constant file-based backup using Memeo) for
some days, and haven't restored to the primary disk.
