FP 2000. Because of virus damage, I had to clear and reload my hard drive.
Everything in FP works, except that subwebs no longer publish when I check
the box.

Are you using the Publish All remote site setting

I republished all. AFter 75 minutes, the server closed the connection. It
appears that everything has published (at least it is all on the www), except
for the new pages in the subweb that started this chain. I created a fresh
page in the subweb and published, using changes -- the new page did not
publish and I got a 404 error again.

What if you open the FP subweb in FP and just publish the local subweb (open web) to the remote subweb (other web)
- the subweb must exist in both locations

I immediately got the FP error message "The web server does not appear to
have any authentication methods enabled. It asked for user authentication,
but did not send a WWW-Authenticate header."

Contact tour host and have them run a FP SE server health check

PS
The subweb can't have any spaces or punctuation in the folder name

I contacted my host provider. They did not know how to do a FP SE health
check, but they reloaded the SE. No improvement. I get the same error message
whether publishing the main web or a sub web. I loaded FP and mywebs onto my
work laptop and was able to publish, so the problem must be on my pc. Since I
am not allowed to run personal sw on my business machine, I still need to
find the problem.

When publishing off my work LT, the main web published correctly, then I got
the following error: "403 Forbidden. You don't have permission to access
/Essays/Original Docs/NA/_vti_aut/author.exe on this server. Additionally, a
404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an Error Document to
handle the request. Apache/2.2.11 (unix) mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.8i DAV/2
mod_auth_passthrough/2. 1 mod_bwlinited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at
www.csa-railroads.com Port 80." The document that started this chain is still
giving a 404.

The ISP corrected the permissions, then reloaded SE 4 times before we finally
got the system to work. All subwebs are publishing correctly now.

You have a folder/subweb with an unsupported folder name
/Essays/Original Docs/NA has a space in it!
- FP does not fully support folder/subwebs with spaces in their names
Rename the folder, or subweb, "Original Docs" to "OriginalDocs" or "Original_Docs" or Original-Docs
