subwebs for discussion forums

L

LisaB

Can someone walk me thru the best way to set up a subweb
for a discussion web (forum).

I create the new web and 'add to current web' then I put
the pages in a folder and convert that to a subweb.

Can't figure out how to do it any other way.

Thanks
LisaB

Creating Discussion web as a subweb:

FP2000
Open Current FP web, File Menu | Open Web
File Menu | New | Web | Discussion Web Wizard
Options: Specify the location of the new web as:
for Server based:
http://CurrentWebName/DiscussionWebName
or
for Disk based:
c:\My Documents\My Webs\CurrentWebName\DiscussionWebName
Do not check either of the two check boxes below.

FP2002
Open Current FP web, File Menu | Open Web
File Menu | New from template | Website templates | Discussion Web Wizard
Options: Specify the location of the new web as:
for Server based:
http://CurrentWebName/DiscussionWebName
or
for Disk based:
c:\My Documents\My Webs\CurrentWebName\DiscussionWebName
Do not check either of the two check boxes below.

Thanks. Next question. From time to time I will make
changes to my site; so how do I avoid the threads from
being messed up.

Also do I do this for each discussion forum I want to
create?

Thanks a bunch!!!!

Lisa,

If you make changes to your site locally, then do no include subwebs when
publishing.

What if I want to make changes to the subweb? ie; shared
borders, headers etc.

Also; why do I 'not check the buttons below' (per your
instructions) when creating a subweb. What is the diff
between the two? (just so I understand).

Thanks

1) Make your changes on the live discussion subweb, not on your local
machine, because if you do, and publish it to the service, you will lose all
your discussion posts.

2) By not check publishing subwebs when publishing your main web, you won't
over write the live discussion web.

If you want to make change to the content of the subweb and it contains the
discussion web, then you will need to always do this on the live site.

Note: theme, share borders, navigation and FP includes component are unique
to the web they are created in, they do not correct over webs.

Thanks so when I make changes live do I save them only or
save and publish?

Also when I'm creating the subweb what is the diff if I
click the box 'add to current web' or if I don't ?

Thanks

You just need to save, you only need to select publish if you want to
maintain a local copy.

Also when I'm creating the subweb what is the diff if I

If you select add to current web, then discussion pages are add to your
current web, and NO subweb is created. Which why I indicated to NOT check
either of the two boxes.
