Subtitling Software ?

Is there any free software that can be used to write subtitles on
movies, just like those for doing lyrics on mp3 for karaoke? It
doesn't have to be strictly freeware although that would be ideal. It
could be adware or nagware or whatever. Anything that could do the job
without me having to pay for it. VCD or avi format would do. Thanks

I can email you a file that works with virtualdub, all you have to do
is change the words and time settings which is easy
