SUBST, JOIN , APPEND, ASSIGN were DOS commands for manipulating the drive
letters and folders ..

..SUBST & APPEND are still supported by Micro(pigs)Soft in XP command
prompt...I'm not certain Re: VISTA

E.g.. SUBST "X: \foldername\ temp" makes the " \foldername\ temp" folder
behave as a drive X:.

SOOO! you can point system Drv.letter C: to any folder ... copy an
installed Windows into that folder & run it as C:\windows

APPEND adds a Folder to a Path APPENDING D:\Games to C:\FUN gives the
equivalent of C:\FUN\Games without moving anything.

I used these commands a lot back in Win 98 to switch to a copy of my O/S,
or to point & run some program that had been moved

to a different drive from where it had been installed .@@

Now I am putting together a new system I want move stuff from current
machine to new one & make

workable copies of my Windows Install.

Does any Bunny here use these commands ...do they work in VISTA ?

How do I get XP or VISTA let me make copies of them (copies of the files NOT
disk images) without the 'Not allowed' &

'in Use' even when I'm trying to copy VISTA from XP or XP from VISTA .

Mouse (it makes sense sometimes)

Yes they work in Vista, but you have to issue the commands
from xplorer2's DOS command option. And the resulting
drive(s) take a while to appear in the drive tree and in
xplorer's drive table.
