I do not know quite how to ask this , so bear with me, please.
When at the location to subscribe to newsgroups I find dozens , if not
hundreds listed & Many of these seem to be French, or in foreign languages.
Also the listings show only " Microsoft.public...." with no indication as
to what they are.
I'm not a mind reader , so it is impossible for me to make an informed
decision as to which of the many NGs to subscribe to. How I actually found
"basic",Help and support , etc. I can not recall at this time , so would
someone please give me some pointers in this matter. I have tried hovering
with the mouse , clicking on the various ones , all to no avail. It does not
seem to be logical for MS to offer these NGs and yet provide no way to tell
one from another, so I'm sure there is some method to this madness that
escapes me.

Any assistance in this matter is appreciated.

Every single microsoft newsgroup is named correctly. The one you posted to,
for example, is microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics
I assume ou are using Outlook Express as your news reader. If this is the
case when you go to subscribe and you ee the list of news groups you hould
see two headers at the topof the list: Newsgroup and Description. It maybe
that the description header is too near to the newgroup header and all you
are seeing is microsoft public and nothing else. If you look careully you
should see a faint dividng line betw een the two headers. Place your mouse
cursor on the faint dividing line and it should change to a bold line with
two horizontal arrows. Now drag the line to the right. As you do the
descripion of the newsgroup should appear.

Hope this helps

Thank you John,
That was all too simple. Leave it to me to miss the obvious. Color me
embarassed. Possibly I should have asked my two year old grandson , who
would probably have known this.
Too old soon, too late smart.
Now, could someone tell me how to turn on my TV ?
Seriously, I am grateful for your assistance and as you may have gathered,
this is all new to me , at this late time in my life.

Thanks for asking the question, I couldn't figure it out either but then I
have 15 grandchildren. So Late Smart, indeed
Dave

In that case, you're looking a partial name, truncated to fit the
available space. In Outlook Express, drag the Newsgroups window
to make it wider, and drag the bar at the right end of the
Newsgroup header to make that field wider.
