Subnetting

G'Day All,

I am hoping to introduce 4 new servers onto my existing network but need to
put them on a new subnet with the ultimate goal of moving them to an off
site/remote location.

While I understand the concept of subnetting, getting it going in a WIN2K3
AD environment is a "first time" for me and so I am seeking some direction.

My existing network is 192.168.131.0/255.255.255.0. So, on my WIN2K3 Server
in Active Directory Sites and Services I created a New Subnet with the
network of 192.168.133.0/255.255.255.0.

Is this correct? Am I on the right track here?

Next I will load up the first new server as a DC with DNS, DHCP. Also I will
configure this new server as a GC server as and E2K3 server will be on the
same subnet with it. This new server will be assigned a stacit IP address of
192.168.133.10.

Can someone give me some additional pointers, please.

Thanks and best wishes.

Just create a new subnet (physically with hardware and logically
with routing config).

Setup the site now, and specify this new subnet as a new subnet
assigned to the "new site" along with the EVENTUAL subnet
where they will be moved.

Create a new Site Link between the existing Site and the
new Site. Do all of the above before messing with the new
DCs (it can be done in the other order but this is easier to
get right.)

Please the new servers on this subnet and configure their IP.
(Test their routing and DNS.)

Then install a new DC (DCPromo) and they SHOULD place
themselves in the correct site.

(Creating) Subnetting is ALMOST a misnomer in AD --
what you do is (merely) right click on the subnet container
in Sites and Services and create a "Subnet OBJECT" that
matches the REAL WORLD subnet out on your network.

You are DESCRIBING your network to AD when you do
this and create the Site Links).

Yes.

Next I will load up the first new server as a DC with DNS, DHCP.

Be sure to creat the new Site, Assign the Subnet to the Site, and
create a SiteLink between the new and (old) other Site(s).

Put the new server on the new (physical) subnet.

THEN run DCPromo to create the new DC.
Also I will configure this new server as a GC server as and E2K3 server

Herb,
Thanks very much for the pointers.
I appreciate it. Also your site looks quite interesting. I will check it
out.

I might come back with more questions. Take care.
