Subnetting

I have a W2K with AD network on a 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 network. I
want to break off my servers (20) to another subnet, is the best way
just to pick up a router and set it up for the servers? Do I need to
tell AD anything for the new subnet? I only have a couple of hundred
users. What do larger companies do (1000+) for routing with subnets as
a rule of thumb? What is the maximum number of clients you should have
on a subnet?

Thanks in advance

My first question would be: Why? Workstations need to access
servers, so you'll *always* be crossing subnets, dealing with
gateways, routes and so on.

Normally, you subnet to reduce network traffic on the subnets. Making
every system cross the subnet doesn't do this. If you had three
servers and 50 workstations dedicated to the accounting department and
they occasionally needed access to other servers but nobody else
needed access to those three, that's a perfect opportunity to subnet
and route with a potential benefit.

FWIW, big (well, in your case small/medium sized) companies have gone
to switched flat networks for your situation and to reduce network
traffic.

Thank you for the explanation, on the larger companies, do you mean
they are putting in switches with vlans?
