Using Microsoft's Wireless base station (MN500) with an
XP machine and 98 machine wired to it (Ethernet), and a
wireless connected 98 machine. I can always always ping
IP addresses among all machines, and can ping the 98
computer names from the XP machine. On the wired 98
machine, I cannot ping the XP machine by name, but can
ping by IP address. If I use Find Computer on the wired
98 machine and use the IP address, I can find and open
the network connection and access the shared files. I
notice the subnet mask on this (wired 98) machine is
255.0.0.0 whereas it is 255.255.255.0 on the wireless 98
and XP machines.

How can I change the subnet mask on the wired 98 machine?

How did the subnet mask get assigned? Manually? DHCP server?

Since you can access the XP machine by IP address, I don't think that
the subnet mask has anything to do with the problem.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers:

Submask assigned by DHCP server, I suppose.
NetBios is enabled...when clicking on NetBios in
Networking, the "I want to enable NetBios over TCP/IP" is
greyed out, but the box has a checkmark in it.

It seems many problems I have date back to installation of
Norton AntiVirus. For awhile, attempts to access the XP
machine over the network got a "not enough memory"
message. Microsoft Article 177078 solved this.
