subfolders in contacts do not show in address book

I have an end user who has grouped all of his contacts
into subfolders, each subfolders has a various number of
cantacts in them. The problem is that the subfolders do
not show in the address book, If i add a new contact and
dont put it in a folder, then it shows up fine, but the
folders do not. He has told me that they did show up in
the address book, before his PC was rebuilt. Just to
clarify, the contacts folder is there, but it shows up
empty in the address book.
 
Are these subfolders enabled as email address books in their Properties?
