Grrrrr!

Could anyone please explain to me what's going on with the styles list in
the formatting toolbar drop down box?

It used to be simple. A list of styles: you selected one.

Now I get a list of just 2 or 3, none of which are appropriate.

If I bring up the "Styles and Formatting" pane and select "all styles", I
still just get a list of 2 or 3. Not even the current style or Normal is
included! "Available Styles" brings up the same, plus "clear formatting".

It seems the only way I can access the styles I want is to select
"Customise" and manually add the style to the pane from there. So what I
used to do with 2 clicks, now takes 8.

What was wrong with the way it used to be?

Hi Grrrrr

If you create a new document based on a brand new normal.dot in its "out
of the box" state, then the only styles immediately available to you
from the drop-down Styles box on the toolbar are Heading 1, Heading 2,
Heading 3 and Normal. If you hold down Shift and click the Styles box on
the toolbar, you get to see all the styles.

If you're interested in following up this idea, there was a discussion
on this topic in one of these newsgroups a couple of years ago. Dave
Rado explained the phenomenon most clearly at
http://groups.google.com/groups?&threadm=#I#XJzdFBHA.980@tkmsftngp05&rnum=1.

There's some information about how the new Styles and Formatting pane
works at:
How the Styles and Formatting pane works in Word 2002 and 2003
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/sfpane/StylesAndFormattingPane.html

And, don't forget that you can determine exactly what styles you always
want to display by saving the display directions in the template. To do
that, Format > Styles and Formatting. In the Show box, choose Custom.
Tick and flick to choose the styles you want to display. Then, tick the
"Save settings in template" box. If you're working on a document based
on normal.dot, and you're later asked whether you want to save
normal.dot, say yes.

Hope this helps.

A really big help. Thanks! It's an improvement over previous Words in this
respect. But why on earth can't Microsoft finish its documentation properly?
