I've opened a document in Word 2003, and at the beginning of the first page,
on the right, is a balloon reading "Style Definition: Comment Text: English".

Where does this balloon come from? What does it mean?

Thanks.

It means that Track Changes in on and that a style has been modified.
Right-click the balloon and choose Accept Change from the context menu.

In order to turn off Track Changes, you can double-click TRK on the status
bar (or click Tools | Track Changes).

Or press Ctrl-Shift-E or click the relevant icon (how would you
describe its appearance?) on the Track Changes toolbar.

Personally, I'd describe the icon as "highlighted" or "activated." :-)

Note that messages posted via newsreaders currently don't seem to show up in
the web interface. :-(

So you can't figure out what it's a picture of, either? Comparing with
the giant version on the Ribbon shows that it's a page with a pencil
in front of it drawing a line below the bottom edge of the page. That
doesn't help the 2003 user ...

Yesterday no messages were posted to this newsgroup for 12 or more
hours, then they seem to have all showed up at once.

Sorry, I misunderstood your remark on the icon. I do see the piece of paper
and the pen drawing a line below it (but, as you wrote, it isn't a helpful
image).

We'll see if our messages in this thread show up eventually (well, my first
one *was* posted in the web interface)...
