Okay so i did a stupid move. I upgraded my ram and
didn't have one chip fully in the socket. When i
restarted my computer i smelled that hot wire smell like
something electric was on fire. I immediately shut it
down. And come to find out it was the ram chip. The
chip was hot to the touch. I figured it was fried and
haven't used it since. Now here's my question. Would
that have fried the socket for the ram chips or just that
chip? I have been to scared to try another chip in that
socket and find out I fried the socket as well as the
chip.

It could have possibly also damaged the RAM socket, yes. Examine
the slot very carefully, using a magnifying glass, to look for signs
of arcing or melting.

It could have hurt the socket, but prob not. I would not be afraid to reseat
the chip that got hot and try again. Even though it got hot, it could still
work and prob will, but not if you see any burn marks.

Unfortunately a fried socket is a possibility. Do you have another RAM
socket available? If so, use it. Otherwise, try another new RAM chip in that
socket and see what happens. It's a gamble, but at least you'll know.

Isn't there a device of some sort that can check the socket's soundness?

Yes, it's called a stick of RAM :) It's the only way you'll be able to see
if the socket still works or not...
