Runnin 2 home computers both with XP Pro ~ Comp #1 can
see itself and it's shared folders, can see Comp #2 in
workgroup but can't access it ~ get the stupid name of
the computer) is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource blah blah error
message

Comp #2 can see it's shared folders but it can't/won't
list the computers in the workgroup it gets network name
in not available You might not have
permission to use this network resource blah blah error
message then says the network path was not found ~ this
is complete horsepoop ~ I've run network setup wizard
more times than my lil brain can count.

Neither computer will ping the other one

Stumped and wishin I'd stuck with Win2K

If you turn off the firewall and simple file sharing then you basically have
Win2K's sharing.

Either way you need to solve the ping problem first. Check if the firewall
is on on either machine, and then check to make sure they are on the same
subnet.

This often means that there is a misconfigured install of a 3rd party
firewall, virus scanner, etc on one of the computers. Is that a
possibility?

The only 3rd party firewall I have on the systems is
ZoneAlarm ~ I've looked it over in it's entirety and
everything is setup to allow.

Thanks Ken ~ your help is HIGHLY appreciated. I hope you
can help me get this all figured out.

Still if you can safely do so, I would uninstall ZA until you get this
problem resolved. We have seen many cases where even disabling ZA wasn't
enough to restore connectivity.
