Neither Microsoft nor Spy Sweeper have detected it. I will
be most grateful for any help (except invading the registr
registry!).

From Stumbleupons website

How do I uninstall the StumbleUpon Toolbar?
1. In Internet Explorer, click the menu on the far right
hand side of the stumble toolbar, then select
Help->Uninstall. If for some reason that doesn't work, you
can type "regsvr32 /u c:\winnt\stumble.dll" at the windows
prompt.
2. In Firefox, go to Tools->Extensions and then click on
StumbleUpon then Uninstall.
3. In Mozilla or Netscape, go here and install the Extension
Uninstaller, and then use it to uninstall StumbleUpon.

Have you tried running a full system scan in Safe Mode?
Boot into Safe Mode (F8) at Start Up; Empty your temporary files AND your
Temporary Internet Files C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder ; Run the scan while in safe mode;
On the Scan Page choose Scan Options > Full System Scan.

Many thanks Plun. I have to apologise for not reporting
that I do not have the stumbleupon toolbar on my
computer. One newsletter complained about it and when I
denied having stumbleupon they replied that the registry
does not lie. With the help of jv16 I checked the
registry but could find no trace of it. I ransacked my
computer and could only find one cookie which I deleted,
but that did not help. I have done a full scan in safe
mode and amd MS found only one error: "Possible Hosts
File Hijack Spyware". Thank you again - this is my first
experience with a message board and I think it's great
knowing that people are willing and able help others in
trouble.
Sincerely,
Lilian

Many thanks Andre, I have now run a full system scan in
Safe Mode but they found only one item (albeit a serious
one) - "Possible Hosts File Hijack spyware". Sorry, I
should have mentioned I do not have the wretched toolbar.
With the aid of jv16 I searched the registry but could
find no trace of it. I have also ransacked my computer
and found only one cookie which I deleted, but that did
not help. Should you have any other ideas I would be
delighted to hear from you. Anyway this
is my first experience with a message board and it most
certainly will not be the last. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Lilian
