Hi All,

I have a new XP system (3GHz P4, 1G DDR, 120G HDD - specific details
available if needed) and have noticed a couple of things in the event log
which I don't understand.
Sometimes, when this system starts up, it has an error within explorer.exe.
Eventually the system comes up, but several icons in the right of the start
bar (don't know the correct name for these) are missing. Is there any way of
doing a selective startup like you could using msconfig in Win98?

Anyway, the following happens every time the PC is started;

Well, I am having a small problem. Sometimes when the PC boots, it will
produce an error window saying that explorer.exe has had a problem. When I
OK this, the PC will continue to boot but several of those little icons at
the bottom right (in the startbar) are missing.
And quite often, OE/IE will not start and cause an 'application hang'
message in the event log.

The problem I've found with WinXP is all the background services that
most people don't need and the event log catches none critical
errors.I only investigate them now if there's something obviously
wrong with the system as life's too short<grin>.

Well, it's not all well. But as you say, life's too short, so I'll make do
with a reboot when I get this explorer.exe error.

You can try the old Win95/98/ME trick.
Install the free MS TweakUI,
http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/tweakui.html
There's a version for XP
and then go through all it's,"Repair" options including the,"Repair
System Files" option and then re-boot.

Thanks, I'll gve that a try.
I've already done an Install-Repair, and tried underclocking. The error
doesn't happen that often (last night I was seeing how I could overclock and
rebooted many many times without this old explorer.exe error).
