I just upgraded my home computer from Windows 98 to XP Home
Edition. After the install completed, I went trough the
activate and register product screens fine, but when I
finished with that and went to getting started, the
computer hung on the "Welcome" screen. It sat there for
about 30 minutes. At that point a rebooted the computer.
It did a disk check and then eventually got the the
"Welcome" screen again and hung. I can't even get to the
Start button. Any suggestions on how to get by this?

The initial transition from the welcome screen to the windows desktop takes some time because the initial hardware settings have to
be read by windows and the devices configured for the first time.

What's happening is a hardware setup problem is hanging the setup at that point. The common causes of that problem are power
management in BIOS (disable), sound card problems (remove the device physically or disable through BIOS to get windows to load the
first time then reinstall the device) or problems with an outdated BIOS version not properly supporting USB (update or "Flash"
BIOS).

Did you run the compatibility checker before you ran the upgrade?
