Sounds like you may have a damaged message on the server. The simplest way
to deal with this would be to use a webmail interface, if your Service
Provider has one, to remove the offending message so the rest will all
download.

It can be your AV scanning your incoming mail and finding it too large, infected or just plain stuck on scanning.

I suggest that you disable the email scanning by uninstalling your AV and re-installing it without the email integration (scanning). Disabling the scanning might have no effect on your AV and that is why I said the latter. Especially if you have Norton,MacAfee or Trend

This has nothing to do with anything on your computer.
It is strictly an issue of the server having a corrupted email.
Log in via webmail and delete the 8 oldest messages, and
any others you don't want to download.

Hello Gary, I just wanted to thank you for this advice and concur this is the
way to go in this instance. I too all of a sudden could not retrieve my email
messages, just seemed to get stuck on downloading once it got to 21 out of 38
messages.
As Hal Holstetler & yourself advised I went to my webmail host & deleted the
offending message and everything works just fine now.
Thanks again guys, you've been a great help.
Best regards. Ivor
