XP prof., fully updated. I used msconfig and ended up with way-too minimal
safemode. Now I can't restore back to normal boot, which is far worse than
the problem I was trying to solve...

Would appreciate your help - especially if you know how to do it from the
command line. THANKS!

when booting up, hold F8, a list will come up, and select normal config, or
last config that worked

I take it you're booting into "Safe Mode with command prompt".
Hopefully, one of these will fix your problem.

1. Hit Ctrl + Alt + Del to bring up Task Manager.
Go to File -> New Task and enter msconfig in the Open box.
Click OK and select the Boot.ini tab in msconfig.
On the Boot.ini tab, remove the check mark in the box next to Safeboot.

2. At the command prompt, enter taskmgr.exe.
Follow the steps outlined in 1.

3. At the command prompt, enter edit C:\boot.ini
Move your mouse cursor to the end of the entry for Windows XP and remove
/safeboot:minimal(alternate shell)
Go to the toolbar and click on File -> Save.
Go back to File and click on Exit.

Restart your computer and see what happens.

Good luck

Is it really Safe Mode, or just regular Windows with 640 x 480 x
low-color graphics? If the latter, a cause may be disabling
System.ini processing in MSConfig, which may force vanilla VGA.

What happens if you enable all entries again in MSConfig? If that
doesn't help, then; are you able to shut down OK? If you can't shut
down (and thus bad-exit), the next boot will defaultto Safe Mode.

If that is not a factor, check C:\Boot.ini to see whether the default
OS entry is set to force Safe Mode.
