after installation I have run MS AntiSpyWare several
times, initially it found more than any other spyware
applet, and removed all but one..

SpyWare reported - BrilliantDigital

it reports an error within the registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\altnet

I have manually gone in to the registry to remove but it
tells me that I do not have RIGHTS even though I am
administrator.

The effects seem to be, certain websites are blocked, i.e
Microsoft and McAfee, therefore getting updates for this
application is also restricted..

Please, someone, any suggestions welcomed

In addtion, it will not let me add this to Quarantine..

I have also run "netsh winsock reset" to resolve
connection problem but did not resolve..

Peter,

Sounds as if some malware is blocking your access to Windows Update and
McAfee. This is not uncommon with some of the latest malware but is hard
to diagnose without having you run some diagnostic programs.
Strongly advise you to download a stand alone AV tool such as Stinger,
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/, and hope that it can disable the
malware enough so that you can successfully download virus definitions
from McAfee and then scan the system with it from Safe Mode.

If necessary, you may have to download a more robust tool such as the
Sysclean Package from Trendmicro http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp
and run that from within Safe Mode. Click the readme_sysclean.txt link
to learn how to run it, how to download their latest pattern file, and
where it must be extracted to.
