I've created a report which works well in Windows 2000 and previous
versions but will not run on XP. I use Access 97 and am passing a
where condition with the opening of the report that includes mid$, left$
and right$ functions. No problem whatsoever in anything except Windows
XP. It gives an error concerning any one of these functions.

It's not the Windows XP version that's is causing the difficulty, but
that specific PC.

That PC has a missing reference.
Open any module in Design view (or click Ctrl + G).
On the Tools menu, click References.
Click to clear the check box for the type library or object library
marked as "Missing:."

An alternative to removing the reference is to restore the referenced
file to the path specified in the References dialog box. If the
referenced file is in a new location, clear the "Missing:" reference
and create a new reference to the file in its new folder.

See Microsoft KnowledgeBase articles:
283115 'ACC2002: References That You Must Set When You Work with
Microsoft Access'
Or for Access 97:
175484 'References to Set When Working With Microsoft Access' for
the correct ones needed,
and

how to reset a missing one.

I tried what you suggested but I do not have any references that are marked as
Missing:. This is happening on two XP machines and no others - did not try to
find a third XP machine.

So far I have had the problem on three XP machines, it finally showed up
another 2000 machine. I can't tell what the others are missing.
