string errors in Acess 2007 after sql express sp2 update

Everything worked fine until I accepted the update to sql express 2005 sp2.
After the install simple string expressions such as date(), right, left began
to throw errors 3085 and 2950.
I searched for further updates and found sql express 2008, which I
installed, but it did not solve my problem
Office diagnostics find no problems.

Can anyone tell me what's up and how to correct?

Sounds like the updates (or other software) created a problems with library
references.
