Stretching WordArt

In PPT2003 you could stretch text vertically or horizontally - but in 2007
it seems that this function no longer exists - but essentially treats all
text the same - it maintains the proportions of the fonts. This is a big
step backwards if true - despite the great 3-D effects that you can
otherwise apply. Am I missing something?

After weeks I just figured it out - just before I saw your post - and you
were right!

So you do have to do a Transform, but you also have to turn off Word-wrap.

Why don't they document this?

I have been trying to figure it out also. What do you mean by "do a
Transform" and "turn off Word-wrap"? I am not familiar with those commands.
And I was specifically trying to do it in Excel.

Got it now. Thanks! And I agree, they should definitely document that. I
have been trying to figure it out since March.

I don't know about Excel, but assume it is the same.

In PPT you go to the Format Ribbon and then to the WordArt Style Section ->
Text Affects -> Transform -> Select "Square" (1st in upper left corner)

Then click on the tiny icon on the bottom right corner of the WordArt Style
Ribbon Section to open the Format Text Effects dialog.

Select the last item Text Box - then uncheck the "Wrap Text in Shape"

Now you can stretch the text.

One thing you lose in the process is the Font Size drop down - but you don't
need it since you can stretch. If you remove the transform, the Font Size
option returns.

Glad you guys got it figured out. Geetesh and I actually discussed how to do
this on page 131 of the PowerPoint 2007 Complete Makeover Kit. :-) (Just
thought I'd toss it out there!) http://tinyurl.com/32a7nx

I did set the internal margins to 0 in that sequence of steps in the book,
but I didn't have to turn off "wrap text in shape." Interesting. Wonder if
that simply has to do with the size of the particular shape and font? I'll
have to play with that when I get a few minutes.

I didn't set the margins to 0, so that doesn't appear to be critical - but
then it might be word wrap OR 0 margins - I haven't checked.

Sorry about missing the fact that someone had documented it. I honestly
searched the net several times over the course of 3-4 months.

Since I never use transform, it never occurred to me that it would be there.
Logically, sort of, it might be there - but who would think you have to set
the transform to "square" to be able to stretch the text? That's about as
counterintuitive as it gets - but then MS can be pretty creative in this
area.

Oh, I didn't mean you missed it at all! Besides, it's not something that's
online -- it's in an actual book Geetesh and I did. I just thought I'd toss
it in the mix because I was excited to know that we covered something people
might actually not be able to find easily. :-)

I know it seems bass-ackwards, but now that text can be both text and
graphical elements, that's what you have to do to distinguish between the
two, I guess...so the text knows to stop acting like actual text, you know?

Word Art in 2007 is a big step forward!

Play with "Word Art Styles" > "Text Effects" > Transform and see if
that
helps
