A generic icon labeled "" shws up after using the internet from time to time.
What is this, how do I prevent it?

download ad-aware 6 (the free personnal edition) and run it, it sounds like
you have a touch of the malware infecting your computer

Dave,
Is this the "~" icon you are talking about. This is a glitch with one of the previous OE updates, that appears if you make a change in the OE address book. MS is aware of the glitch. It might be fixed in XP2, but I don't know for a fact.

I've installed SP2 and have just done a clutch of actions
that normally should have generated the ~ file.

I don't see any ~ file anywhere. Maybe they did fix it.

Seems to be fixed, instead of getting <name>.wa~, the backup file is
<name>.wab~
saved in X:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Address Book. No problems with "~" since SP2 update.

A file that is named "~" appears on the desktop or in another location on
