Strangled sound...

Have just changed from XP Home to XP Professional and
everything sounds like Mickey Mouse & Co!! From Windows
start up to mp3s.. have checked everything, can't find
anything wrong.. please help someone, before I chuck the
whole thing out of the window!!

A possible saviour....? Depending on your age (?!) it sounds like playing a 33rpm record at 45rpm or alternatively someone on helium!! And that includes every noise a computer can make...
 
Lets try a couple of things (or let me know if you have tried them),

In the Sound and Audio Devices Properities, click on Advanced uder the
Speaker Settings, then select the Performance tab. Adjust the hardware
acceleration, appling and checking the sound at each level or adjustment.
