strangely missing icons in explorer...

Carl

First, a couple notes about my setup:

1) I have pretty much all the settings in XP set
to 'Classic' -- the folder view included.
2) My %homedrive% is I: (not C:) -- back when i installed
XP, another harddrive with 98SE inherited the letter C:

OK, here's the deal. When i open up an explorer window
(via the WinKey-E shortcut, let's say), i'm supposed to
get a Folder View on the left with (among other items)
Desktop and all the drives on my computer. All of them
*should* have some sort of mini icon, (for the hard
drives, cd-roms, and all the folders, and other stuff).

Well, they all used to, but when i removed my C: drive
(not the XP system drive), all the icons on the left
disappeared. All that's left is a '+' box to the left of
the drive/folder names.

What's perhaps even stranger is that, all that seems to be
bothering explorer is the presence of *a* C: drive -- not
it's contents. When i map some other folder to drive
letter C: (using either the "subst" or "net use"
commands), then opening up an explorer window (with the
Folder View on) works just fine, with all the icons where
they're supposed to be...

Anyway, i find it all a little odd -- not to mention
annoying. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,
Carl

Hi Carl,

Common behavior if XP is not installed on C:\. Here is the workaround:

The Folders Bar in Windows Explorer Does Not Contain Any Icons
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307028

Adaptation for the Article: Needs to be a path not a drive letter, so subst
c: [x]:\. Note backslash converts a drive letter to a path. It must point
to a valid folder as in: c: d:\Windows

Hey Kelly,

Thanks for the speedy reply! I'm glad to hear this is a
common problem, not just my messed up computer.

I had previously gotten the "subst c: i:\" command to deal
with the problem -- but that's kind of annoying to have
two letters for the same drive, not to mention that i
still occasionally plug in my old "C:" drive...

do you know if microsoft has any real fix for this bug?
or are we just sorta stuck with the work-around?

oh well.. if not, thanks anyway :)

All that I know for now, Carl. :o)
