Hi.

I have a strange problem, i have tried find any answer at Microsofts KB and
tried to Google, but still no clue. So i tought i try som forums and see if
someone knows.

I scaned a computer for adware, viruses and crap like that, i cleared the
adware stuff. But when i was about to scan for viruses i discovered that
Norton had not updated for a while, after a while i manged to download the
new patterns and ran a check. I found 10 files infected that Norton could not
deinfect, delete or put in quarantin. Oh well i tought, i know the names of
the files i need to delete, so rebooted the comp and went into safe mode. I
can´t remember the virus name, but i hade 3 processes running,
c:\windows\iexplore.exe, c:\windows\rundll32.exe and c:\windows\explore.exe.
I tought i´d delete them and then run another scan.

But this is where my problem appears. I can´t logon to the system anymore,
there are 4 local users plus administrator. All users, includning
administrator starts the login sequense and then after about 2 - 3 sec
"Saving settings" and then "Log out".

It dosen´t matter if i'm in safe mode or normal mode or any other mode.

I tried running a recovery console and delete the files, i copied them to a
separate folder first in case. Still the same problem.

Its a Windows XP Pro SP2.

Anyone here have a clue?

So what exactly did you delete? Explorer.exe, iexplore.exe and
rundll32.exe?

In this situation you may have to do a Repair Install if you cannot
get Windows to boot at all. Boot the computer from your Windows XP CD
and follow the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Good luck

If IExplore, Explorer, or RunDLL32 are infected, you HAVE to clean them.
THESE ARE CRITICAL WINDOWS RUN FILES!1

Heh.

Anyway, do the repair off the Win XP cd.

If the files were "Iexplore" "Explore" "RunDL32" those are safe to delete:
they are spoofed names of windows components.
