Windows 2000 network with a Windows 2000 (SP4) PC on it.

Dear all,

Suddenly after a user logged out to go to lunch they can't get back on. The
PC reports that "there is a time difference between the client and the
server". A quick logon as the local administrator shows that windows time
is the same as the server (we use the net set time command in login
scripts). I rebooted and checked the BIOS time, that was fine as well.

We reformatted the PC to a fresh installation on Win2K + SP3 with NOTHING
else done to it. First thing I did was add it to the Windows domain. After
a reboot the error message appears again! All other PC's are fine!

Can't find anything relevant on the web or MS KB's.

Any ideas?

Why do you need to use a net set time command in the login script??? By
default, if you have a W2K domain, W2K workstations will automatically synch
their times with the domain controller. So, the domain controller is the
only machine you need to worry about and it should be set to synch with a
internet time source such as the naval observatory or MIT. Have you tried
"remarking" out the login script command and rebooting the workstation?

Okay, that's one thing to consider BUT the error appears before the login
script has a chance to run. All other PC's work fine (100+).

Very strange indeed. Could be hardware related I guess. If you have
another identical pc, try swapping out the hard drive. Another thing I
might suspect is the nic. If you are sure it is only that one pc, then you
need to narrow down what part of the pc, software, motherboard, cpu, etc..
With a fresh format I wouldn't suspect software unless it's a domain issue.
When you formatted, did you unjoin the domain first and delete the computer
account in AD? Maybe even give it a different machine name when you re-join
just to be sure there isn't something flaky with the computer account.
